I've been testing out phonics websites and apps with my Words Their Way group. We are currently working within Letter Name - Alphabetic. We just finished our unit on consonant digraphs and started the blends unit this week. The following sites and apps are first grader approved for reviewing and practicing short vowels, consonant digraphs and blends:
www.softschools.com - 1st grade Phonics
www.sadlier-oxford.com/phonics/student.cfm
www.readingbear.org
Rocket Speller
Blend Seeker
Also, I found a comprehension app the kiddos are enjoying: 1st Grade Reading Comprehension. It has tons of short passages and comprehension questions. GREAT resource!!

Apps
Hey Ladies!
My kids and I are loving the app Cramberry. I love this app because I can "make" my own flash cards for my students based on what we are currently learning. You can type in what you want on the front and back of the "card." The kids can then match the front and back. When they make a match, the cards go away and more pop-up. I use this for both literacy and math! The other reason I love it so much is that it is FREE!!!
Another app I'm just starting to use with my students is Phonic Awareness (I can't get the pic to load, but it has a green caterpillar on a blue stripped background). With this app, they can segment, blend, study vowels, and check themselves. I use this mostly with my struggling students as an intervention. They can also use this app on their own. It's great to hear them helping each other segment or blend different words! This app is also FREE!
Another app I've just introduced to my students who need a challenge is Jumbline 2. This gives them 5 letters (or more if you are brave). They rearrange the letters to make 3, 4, and 5 letter words. I encourage them to use patterns and blends that we have studied. The challenge for them is usually the 5 letter word. I try to help them figure that one out, but sometimes it's a challenge for me too! Again, it's FREE! You're shocked I know! :)
I am looking forward to see y'all in about a week!

Sight Word App
My kiddos and I have a new favorite sight word app - Abby Sight Words Games & Flash Cards for Reading Success!!! I stumbled on it when searching for sight word games and it was well worth the $1.99 I paid for it! They have a free version as well, but it only lets you access the Pre-K words for the games.
It has 7 word sets: Pre-K, Kindergarten, 1st Grade, 2nd Grade, 3rd Grade, Nouns & All Words.
And 6 games: Word Machine, Gears, Bingo, Memory Games, Spelling & Flash Cards.
You start by choosing your word set, then game, and you're ready to practice your sight words!! Here's a breakdown of the games:
Word Machine - Listen to the word machine and touch the word it says.
Gears - Touch the dots and listen. Match the correct word (gear) to each dot.
Bingo - Touch each word the alien says. Get four in a row and you have a bingo.
Memory - Match the spoken word to each written word.
Spelling - Listen for the word and use the letter tiles to spell it.
Flash Cards - Touch each card and listen to the sight word.
We hope you enjoy this app just as much as we do!! Happy sight word learning!!

readingbear.org
I've been looking at this new FREE phonics website called readingbear.org. I made sub accounts for each student in my class and finally figured out how to get them logged in easily. I plan to get them started on this Friday when I get the netbook cart for my class. My school has also purchased a collection of e-books from mycapstonelibrary.com. My class LOVED the selections. There are many nonfiction titles that really interest them. The books are read to the student with the words being highlighted as it is being read.
